In
April, 2007, those on Bonaire were once again able to enjoy
the
sounds of happy Dixieland Music by the Dutch Dixies.
For those who like this kind of music, there was a unique
opportunity to listen or swing to the well-known evergreens
from 1920 'til 1950, during the Rotary Club Bonaire's 25th
Anniversary Celebration.
On
the invitation of Rotary Club of Bonaire, the Dutch
Dixies gave a number of concerts. All revenues were donated
to the Rotary Club of Bonaire, for sponsoring of special
projects directed at the youth of Bonaire.
This
special Dixieland Project originated four years ago when
the band’s clarinet player Jan Vervoort
met the American banjo player Gil O’Gawa. Together they
performed in a guest performance in the Jazz club BonJazz.
Encouraged by the enormous success Jan looked for ways to continue
it. In 2004, they performed again as “Transatlantic Dixieland
Duo” at various locations. Then Jan worked at the idea
to play and perform during one whole week with a complete Dixieland
Orchestra--this came to fruition in 2005, when Rotary invited
them to return to Bonaire for a series of popular concerts.
The
Dutch Dixies are six skilled musicians, all well recognized
in their genre. The orchestra is always a welcome guest on
various Jazz Festivals in Europe.
